2021 Year in Review

Our intake for 2021 was up 67% from 2020! You, our donors, supporters, and volunteers, were the only reason we were able to raise that number last year so THANK YOU for helping us save more lives last year. If we want to do more in 2022 we are going to need your help!

Medical Cases

Skye was found wandering down a county road in Manvel with multiple wounds to her face. We took her to the vet to get cleaned up where they discovered several buckshot fragments in her wounds. Someone shot this poor girl in the face. Luckily, other than a broken tooth she didn't have any major injuries, and with a little TLC she is well on her way to being fully healed. The best news? Skye has been adopted by her foster!

Snapdragon aka Snappy had been with us since he was just 2 weeks old. He had a rough time as a young kitten overcoming an upper respiratory infection and ringworm, but then he developed an uncommon bacterial infection in his gums. We tried several rounds of antibiotics, but nothing worked so the only option left for Snappy to live a life without pain was to have almost all of his teeth pulled. Thankfully, with your help, we were able to get Snappy the surgery he needed and he's now fully recovered in his very own forever home!

Rosie had entropion, a condition in which the eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes and surrounding hair to rub against the dog's sensitive cornea. Now that Rosie's entropion has been corrected and she's been spayed, she is available for adoption! Louisa was found on the side of the road, cold, underweight, and barely moving with blood coming out of one of her eyes. A good samaritan picked her up and brought her to us. X-rays showed a bullet lodged between her shoulders very close to her spine. Yes, another innocent animal shot by a human. The bullet entered Louisa's eye and ruptured her eardrum causing loss of balance. Although the eye cannot be saved, she's doing well in foster. Her surgery is scheduled for March 10th.

Capital Campaign Coordinator and Committee Members

We are looking for someone with fundraising experience or enthusiasm for fundraising to lead the effort, along with a committee, to help us raise the funds for our proposed shelter building. The project will be approximately $80,000 if we go with a traditional wood building and $150,000 if we choose a metal/steel building. That decision should be made shortly before you get started.

Having this building would allow us to pull more at-risk animals from local shelters and help sick, injured, and at-risk animals in the community plus increase space and ability to help more dogs. We get dozens of cries for help daily that we have to turn away due to a lack of space and we look forward to being able to accommodate more pets in need.

TNR Efforts and Barn Cat Adoptions

Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) is widely considered the ideal way to manage feral cat colonies. Last March we began working to TNR a cat colony in Manvel. Last week we fixed the last two cats in the colony! 24 cats total were spayed and neutered - 14 were returned to the colony and 10 were able to rehabilitated and adopted out.

That said, sometimes the feral or community cats we work with cannot be returned to their colony, usually because residents in the area have threatened the cats or because apartment managers have banned the feeding of strays. In cases like this, we work to find citizens looking to adopt barn cats. Barn cat adopters provide a safe environment, food, and water and our feral cats all-natural pest control!
